Why won't my fringe hang straight? (5 easy fixes)

✦ Fringe beading
You know the moment. You've stitched every single strand, tied off, held your earring up to admire it like a proud mama… and the fringe is doing its own thing. Stiff as a board. Sticking straight out sideways like it's trying to escape. 🙃
(Respectfully… we've all been there. Some of us more than others. Me. I'm some of us.)
Here's the good news: it's not a talent thing. Swingy, flowy fringe comes down to a few tiny habits that nobody tells you about when you're starting out. So let me tell you 👇
01Your tension is too tight
This is the big one, girlie. When you go back up through the strand it's so tempting to yank it tight so it feels "secure". But fringe needs a little wiggle room to swing. Pull until the beads sit snug together, then ease off just a touch. 👉 Quick test: hold your earring up. If the strands stick out stiffly instead of dropping straight down, they're too tight.
02The turnaround bead is getting squashed
That little bead at the bottom of each strand? That's your turnaround bead, and it does a lot of heavy lifting. Before you tighten, give the strand a gentle tug down with your fingers so everything lines up nice and straight instead of bunching.
03Your thread has memory
Thread fresh off the bobbin wants to curl back into a coil (rude), and it drags your fringe right along with it. Before you start, give your working length a gentle stretch between your hands and run it through some wax or conditioner.
psst
Waxing your thread also means fewer knots. Double win.
04Your beads aren't consistent
This one took me way too long to figure out. Cheap, uneven seed beads all sit at slightly different angles, and over a long strand that adds up to wonky, stiff fringe. It's the whole reason I'm loyal to Miyuki 11/0 rounds now. 👉 Search "Miyuki 11/0 seed beads" on Etsy, filter by your country, and find a small shop with a good selection you can keep going back to.
05You haven't let it hang yet
Fresh fringe always looks stiffer than it really is. Once you're done, hold it up and gently run each strand between your fingertips from top to bottom. Then hang it up overnight and walk away. (I know. Patience. Ew.) You'll be shocked how much it relaxes by morning.
A little pep talk
Every gorgeous fringe earring you've saved on Instagram had a wonky, stiff first draft. Every. Single. One. Mine included (I have a drawer of evidence).
The difference between "mine never look like that" and "wait, I made that?!" isn't talent. It's tension, thread and a tiny bit of patience. All three can be learned, and you're already learning them just by reading this. ✨
FAQQuick fringe questions
Can I fix stiff fringe without starting over?
Usually, yes! Gently work each strand between your fingers to ease the tension, then let it hang overnight. If one strand is still sticking out the next day, it's often quicker to snip it and re-stitch just that one than to fight it.
Why does my fringe look wonky and uneven?
Nine times out of ten it's mixed-up tension (some strands tight, some loose) or beads that aren't all the same size. Keep your pull consistent strand to strand, and stick to good quality, consistent seed beads like Miyuki 11/0 rounds.
What thread should I use for fringe earrings?
Any decent beading thread will do the job as long as you prep it. Stretch it, wax or condition it, and don't work with a crazy long length (that's how the knots get you).
